OLYMPIC RING: Palmerston North taekwondo exponent Alex Rings is off to Korea in May, hoping to qualify for the London Olympics.

Third Year Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science student Alex Rings is shedding kilos to compete in a division below his regular weight at the World Taekwondo Championships.

The worlds are in South Korea in May, the home of the martial art, and Alex, aged 20, will be in the U-63 bantam division. He told The Manawatu Standard that because taekwondo is the country’s national sport, he is expecting the competition will be a “massive deal”.

UCOL enrolments confirm vocational approach to study

The pattern of enrolments for the first semester at UCOL in Palmerston North suggests students are taking a more vocational approach to their choice of study programmes.

There are also indications that Government policies linking student loans to study success are having an effect.

Deputy Chief Executive – Strategy (Marketing) and Dean of the Humanities & Business Faculty Clive Jones says there are still a limited number of places available on some programmes but people will need to be quick, just a week out from the start of Semester One.

Icon status for Teacher Excellence Leader

UCOL’s Leader of Teaching Excellence Janet Walke has been appointed as an Icon, UCOL’s highest academic honour.
Her appointment as one of two new UCOL Icons brings the total number of UCOL academic staff with Icon status to 11.
Icon appointments are made to academic staff members who have achieved sustained distinction and excellence in their fields of expertise.

Eleven staff members have also been promoted to the level of Expert, having shown significant national / international recognition within their industry or profession.

Deputy Chief Executive Bonnie Dewart says Icons and Experts exemplify the high quality of teaching at UCOL and the value placed on community and industry recognition. “These excellent academics are role models and mentors for other academic staff, and an inspiration to our students.”

Lorraine Webb becomes a UCOL Icon

Head of Painting at Whanganui UCOL’s Quay School of the Arts, Lorraine Webb, has been appointed as an Icon, UCOL’s highest academic honour.

Her appointment as one of two new UCOL Icons brings to 11 the number of UCOL academics with ICON status.
Icon appointments are made to academic staff members who have achieved sustained distinction and excellence in their fields of expertise.

UCOL Motorsport commits to Manfeild Park

Motorsport at UCOL

UCOL has confirmed its commitment to Feilding and Manfeild Park as the venue for its high profile and very popular Motorsport programmes.

UCOL has just signed a formal agreement with the Manfeild Park Trust to lease the I A and P Hall building in the Manfeild complex.

Dean of Trades and Technology Kelly Gay says the hall will be renovated, with purpose built facilities for students on UCOL’s two Motorsport certificate programmes. “Our Motorsport programme has proven to be very successful and we have rapidly outgrown our present facilities on South Street.  We expect student numbers to grow so we are future-proofing the quality of the programme by developing innovative new facilities in the I A and P Hall.
